| Summary |
Static and dynamic forces effect bone architecture. Static forces as the same compressive strength and dynamic forces as the same tensile strength are accepted. Wolf's Law “The form of a bone being given, bone elements place or displace themselves in the direction of functional pressure ” Hemiplegia is a special sample to compare paralyzed and nonparalyzed limbs. We evaluated 17 hemiplegic subject, 3 postmenopausal women and, 14 men. Three of the patients had heterotopic ossification on paralyzed limbs. Femur neck, trochanter, Ward's bone mineral density (BMD), femur neck X-ray, and clinical status were evaluated. There were statistically significant difference between paralysed and non-paralysed femur neck and trochanter BMD (p<0.01, p<0.05 respectively). Functional ambulation period and BMD were not correlated (p>0.05). Although the patient population was small and patients were in bedridden period this study showed that bedriddenperiod, ambulation, period, gate analysis, daily living activityy, calcium intake were important factor in the bone structure changes. |
