130 patients diagnosed as postmenopausal osteoporosis were treated with salmon calcitonine for the first 15 days with a dosage of 100 I.U. intramuscularly daily, continued with 100 i. u. intranasally. This therapy were continued for 3 to 12 months with an average of six months. Ages of the patients were between 43 and 74 years old, with an average of 63.4 years. The biochemical laboratory values such as serum calcium, inorganic phosphorous, total alkaline phosphatate and creatinine and also the radiological films were obtained at the beginning and at the end of therapy. All of them were evaluated with tests developed for functional capacity, mobility and pain. Although no significant change were obtained for laboratory values and radiological findings, functional capacity an mobility increased and pain decreased significantly. 18 patients encountered nausea and vomiting and feeling of warmth as an adverse effect of the drug was observed in 7 patients. All these adverse effects recovered spontaneously. Only in 2 patients reduction of the dosage was needed. |
