Summary
Stress fractures, which are frequently seen in sportsmen exposed to overuse injury due to exercising on unavaliable surfaces, are located particularly on the posteriomedial border of tibia due to repetitive microtraumas. Thirty sportsmen with leg pain along the medial tibial border were included in this study. Before therapy, the tibias of sportsmen were evaluated using radiographies and scintigraphies. A-four-week therapy programme, consisting of rest + ice + nonsteroid antiinflamatuary drugs + exercise therapy, was applied to all cases. For evaluation after a four-week therapy, scintigraphic staging and changes seen on radiographs were compared. Scintigraphic lesions were classified according to “ 1988 Matin Classification “ and radiographs were reviewed in terms of periosteal reaction and callus formation. It was concluded that scintigraphy was superior to radiographic examination in early diagnosis of stress fractures; so in planning of the therapy and prevention of the complications. After therapy, significant improvements were detected in stress fractures in scintigraphic and radiographic evaluations.
